Description:
The Geological Museum Valentí Masachs from the Technical University of Catalonia is sited on the Technical College of Manresa. It was founded in 1980 being its first director Professor Valentí Masachs-Alavedra. The first mineral and paleontology display cases the museum opened up with were filled with his private collection of minerals and fossils as well as samples of minerals collected by the various staff members of the museum.
In 1993 new display cases showing the particular application of the minerals were added. This marked a new era in its pedagogical offer to both teachers, pupils and students of all levels. In 1995 the museum was completed with new displays on the different uses of the rocky materials.
Many of the display cases are being periodically renewed with different up today themes such as meteorites, agates, the euro and its mineral composition, the several industrial uses of the diamonds, the metamorphism, the reordering of fossils according to their geochronological classification, Gaudí, training rock beings, radioactivity, etc.
Today the museum has a fund of about 5000 minerals, 2000 rocks and 3000 fossils. This has been archived thanks to the samples provided by the staff members of the museum, private donations, exchanges and a few acquisitions.
