Lavishly illustrated with cross-sections and excellent photographs of the bulk of Nikosthenic black-figure, this first comprehensive study of the subject focusses to a considerable extent on the technique and style of the potterwork. As based on the identification of the hands of individual potter, painters and signers, Nikosthenes emerges as a potter-painter who fashioned most of the vases bearing his signatures, while decorating and personally signing nearly all the Nikosthenes amphorae. Contrary to mainstream opinion, Nikosthenes' workshop was, according to sixth-century standards, probably neither exceptionally large or exceptionally productive.

H.A.G. Brijder, Siana Cups III, The Red-black Painter, Griffin-bird Painter and Siana Cups Resembling Lip-cups. Two parts: cloth-bound. Part 1: text, 22 x 31 cm. c. 300 pp. including 150 drawings. This volume, being a sequel to Siana Cups I and II, deals with nearly 500 Siana cups and 45 Komast cups. Mainly small cups are considered in this next to last part of H.A.G. Brijder's study on Sianas, many of which show varying degrees of similarity to lip-cups. Therefore the book opens with a comment on the relationship between Siana, Gordion and Little-Master cups. In the following chapters, the work of the Red-black Painter, the Griffin-bird Painter and several others is discussed. Some 160 Siana and 45 Komast cups that have come to the author's attention since the publication of Siana Cups II (1991) are described and commented

This third and last part of C.M. Stibbe's study on Laconian black-glazed pottery (LBP) from the Archaic period examines the closed vase-forms, concluding with a chapter on various exceptional shapes. The lavishly illustrated pottery is basically ordered according to the dual criteria of form and function: (1) pouring vessels, (2) storage vessels, (3) miscellaneous functions. As in LBP I and II, the individual forms are divided into stylistic groups and subgroups. Matters like technical factors, find-circumstances, statistics, chronology, and illustrations are treated as in LBP II. The three-part study is completed now. LBP I-III offer a complete view of the Laconian black-glazed vessels which played a role in the symposion. Besides kraters (LBP I) and vases for drinking (LBP II), the wine jugs (oinochoai) and the table amphorae for serving wine constitute a substantial part of the production (LBP III). The aryballos occupies the largest part of LBP III. The overseas succes of these small oil flasks is comparable to that of the Laconian kraters and black-figured cups.
