Description:
Amsterdam's Botanical Garden contains over 6000 tropical and indigenous trees and plants, including a 2000-year old agave cactus.

Originating as a mediaeval monastery herb garden, the collection of the Hortus Botanicus was amassed during the seventeenth century through plants and seeds brought back by traders of the East India Company for use as medicines.

Recent additions to the garden include a huge hothouse, which incorporates three different tropical climates.

Note: the management of the Garden is responsability of the City of Amsterdam.
