The Greenhouses
University of Aarhus
|
Description: The Greenhouses in the Botanical Garden of Aarhus house more than 4000 species on display. Five greenhouses with different climates cover a total of 2000 m2. The largest house "the palmhouse" is 13 meters high.
The facilities include handicap friendly entrance, toilet and access to most of the greenhouses. Botany student workers are present to answer questions about the plants. A booklet with more thorough reading on the plant-collections in Danish, a leaflet-guide on the Botanical Garden, posters and postcards can be purchased at the entrance.
The purpose of the greenhouses is to show the public the diversity of the plant world, and the necessity for preserving natural habitats, not least in the tropics where the pressure on the environment is overwelming. Simultaneously the greenhouses are an educational tool for biology students at the university, as well as for public schools and kindergardens and they also serve as a tool for research in selected plant groups. Finally they are one of the tourist attractions of the city of Aarhus. Beside the roughly 70,000 people who visit the greenhouses each year about 150 classes from primary schools and as many kindergardens visit us for guided tours.
