Description: The Botanical Garden of the university is the oldest university botanical garden in Spain. The first initiatives of Universitat for the creation of a botanical garden as an academic and research centre date back to the 16th century, although its present location dates back to 1802. Ever since, the Botanical Garden has gone through moments both of splendour and decadence. In 1812, Napoleon's troops invaded València and devastated the garden. It was later recovered and it experienced a splendid era during the second half of the 19th century, when the large greenhouses and the latticework shady garden were built.
The Gardens surface area covers 4,5 hectares, within which the Botany School is located, in the style of classical botanical gardens. There are also various monographic collections outdoors, which include succulent and medicinal plants, and rocaille. There are seven greehouses each of which contains a specific collection of plants, namely orchids, carnivores, ferns, Bromeliaceae, tropical palms and succulent plants. Lastly, mention should be made of the great umbraculum dating from 1900 under which shade-seeking plants are collected together.
Additionally, the Gardens have a library, a herbarium and a seed bank.
