Description:
In 1818 Alexander I, the Russian tsar, gave Polish Government "so called Royal Garden, situated between Łazienki and Belvedere Palace, to create a botanic garden for Warsaw University". Professor of botany, Michał Szubert was made head of the garden. He divided the garden into three parts. The scientific part was dedicated to the plant systematics, it was thought as the assistance for the lecturers and students of the University; the pomological part was designed for the purpose of the training of future fruit-farmers. The last strolling part was designed for the public use. The garden also had excellent greenhouse facilities. The Garden was thriving. The plant list published in 1824 consisted of 11.000 species (including 1000 species of the Polish flora).
