Description:
Situated at the ground floor of the Faculty of Biology, the Zoological Museum is one of the component parts of the Babeş-Bolyai University being, first of all, a solid educational basis for the students of the Faculty and for the pupils. After December 1, 1818, the Romanian University was established in Cluj, the first director of the Zoological Institute was professor Ioan Scriban, a prestigious scientist. He and his assistants gathered, during their trips, a rich biological material which was used during the practical training of the students and which enriched the collections of the Museum. In what scientific value is concerned the Museum, occupies the second place, in this country, after the famous Gr. Antipa, Museum in Bucharest. The museum, has three departments; the Exhibition, 500.000 specimens, the Scientific Research collection, 300000 specimens and the Reserves of the Museum. The faunal Exhibition has, besides the biological material, exhibited in systematic order, large dioramas are being restored, using modern Museum techniques. The intention is to put the pieces in accordance with natural ecosystems. Some old exhibits are replaced with new ones.
