Description: The University of Richmond Museums consists of 3 museums all located on the campus of the University of Richmond. The Marsh Art Gallery was formed in 1968 and moved into its current location at the George M. Modlin Center for the Arts in 1996. Also in 1996 the museum acquired the I. Webb Surratt Jr. Print Collection which began the museum's active acquisition of works for the permanent collection. In 1999 the Marsh Art Gallery joined with the Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature to form the University of Richmond Museums, and in 2001, the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center was inaugurated.
The Marsh Art Gallery's mission is to be a forum for the visual arts and a catalyst for widely varied issues of visual expression, art research, and scholarship within the university and throughout the greater Richmond community and region. To further this mission the museum regularly presents exhibitions, lectures, openings, gallery talks, workshops, concerts, symposia and other programs.
One of Richmond's best-loved museums, the Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature, University Museums, has collections representing cultures and countries around the world, from ancient works and cultural artifacts to contemporary art. It also offers the chance to explore the natural treasures of our planet with the museum's extensive holdings of shells, fossils, minerals, and gemstones. In addition to its installations of the permanent collection, the museum presents changing special exhibitions.
The Harnett Print Study Center extends the University of Richmond Museums' mission to provide a forum for the study and appreciation of prints and works on paper. It serves the university's students, faculty, and staff, as well as the greater Richmond area and national and international audiences.
