Description: The first botanical garden in Sweden, founded in 1655 by Olof Rudbeck the elder. The garden became famous under Carl Linneaus' leadership. It is laid out in the French Style and restored following Linnaeus' and Carl Hårleman's design from 1745. Today approximately 1,300 species are grown here.
Carl Linnaeus (1707-78) became famous for his sexual system, first published in 'Systema naturae', 1735 and for the introduction of binomial nomenclature, used consistently from 1753 in his 'Species plantarum' wherein each plant species received a double name in Latin, the first of which denotes the genus, the second half the species.
In 1741 he was appointed Professor of Medicine at Uppsala University and immediately started to devolp the botanical garden, which soon attained world-wide fame. Scientists from all over the world came here to study his garden, which was a veritable handbook in botany. The garden is still laid out according to his sexual system.
