Description: The Mapungubwe Museum serves as a university and public archaeological museum. The collection centres around southern Africa's first kingdom which flourished in the 13th century AD. This archaeological museum consists of fine gold ornaments recovered from royal graves, ceramicware, refined bone tools, ivory, shells, trade glass and indigenous beads, clay figurines, iron and copper implements and Sung celadon. Mapungubwe is renowned as South Africa's new Mapungubwe National Park and a World Heritage Site. The Univeristy of Pretoria has been proud custodians of this valuable collection for more than seventy years after its discovery in the 1930's and today plays a valuable role in conserving South Africa's cultural heritage.
