Description:
The Natural History Museum of Crete was established in the early ‘80’s. It is part of the Faculty of Biological Science of the University of Crete. It consists of five departments: Zoology, Botany, Geology - Paleontology, Mineralogy and Anthropology.

The campus of the University of Crete on Knossou Av., host the research labs, the collections and the offices of the museum. The exhibition halls of the museum are housed in a modern building located at Sofokli Venizelou Ave, Heraklion Crete.

A great deal of effort is being made in order to increase the material kept in the collections of the museum and preserve it properly. Most of the material held by the museum has been donated by its researchers. Besides the material gathered within the framework of the research projects of the Museum, much of the new material is collected by researchers during the Museum’s annual scientific expeditions to different parts of Greece and the Mediterranean.
