Description:
The Museum of Art and Archaeology-Institute of Civilization was established on January 27, 1970 by decree No.°70-078 as a research institute ajoined to the Rector's office of the University of Antananarivo.

The museum's mission is:

- to contribute to the teaching of Madagascar's art, archaeology and ancient civilization. Its collections and documentation are therefore at the disposal of students and researchers (both Malagasy and foreign).

- to maintain the inventory of national archaeological heritage and propose to authorities measures for the protection and restoration of sites and monuments.

- to present its collections to the public through exhibitions.

In summary, the museum's primary mandate is to contribute to the promotion of better knowledge about Madagascar’s cultural history.

The museum’s repository stores ethnographic objects from all around Madagascar that have been collected by the museum since the early 1960s. All regions and tribes are represented in the collection.

The repository contains around 7,000 objects.
