Museum of the History of University
Tbilisi State University
|
Description: Before founding the University the societies for spreading literacy and those of history and ethnic studies were located in the princes’ gymnasium, built under the leadership of Niko Tskhvedadze. These societies possessed very rich museum collections. In 1921, under the blessing of the patriarchy of Georgia, the museum of ancient church belongings, established in 1918, was delivered to the Georgian University. Hence, by the year 1921 within Tbilisi State University were gathered the works of art and the collections of “the museum of ancient church belongings”, “history, ethnic society”, “the society for spreading literacy”. The University employees have contributed much to the enrichment of these reserves with new exhibits.
Right upon the establishment of TSU, under the decision of professors’ council the University officials began to make various collections: the negatives of the photos of the well-known photographer V. Ermakov, entomologic collection of D. Maluzhenko (63000 copies), relief maps of Caucasus, collection of minerals…
The leading scientists of TSU have always been in course of all educational and museum engagements within the country, the foreign-published rare books, handwritten works and historical belongings. Despite the financial crisis, they have always tried to make relevant acquisitions for the University.
The University Art Room was established in 1920 under the leadership of Giorgi Chubinishvili. With the support of Ivane Javakhishvili the Georgian Art Museum was established at TSU on the Art Room basis. In 1924 the Museum was located on the 3rd floor of the #3 TSU building, under the dome of the prayers’ room of the former gymnasium.
In 1925 with the decision of the Public Committee for Education the collections of the museum of the societies for spreading literacy were also delivered to the University.
The Museum of the History of University was established on December 4, 1986 under the # 292 Decree of the Rector of Tbilisi State University. The Museum aims to collect and give publicity to the exhibits reflecting the history of establishment and further development of the first university in Georgia.
The Museum is now located in N1 historical building, where in 1918 Tbilisi State University was opened.
