Al Al-Bayt University

Description:
In keeping with its scientific and academic mission and answering its philosophy and gols, as well as its keen interest in being a university combining the requirements of scientific methodology in teaching and research on the one hand and the requierments of belief and clarity of vision on the other, in order to creat the desirable harmony between the rounded personality of the Muslim and his new environment, Al al-Bayt University has begun 1994 preparations to established a museum of the cultural heritage of the Islamic civilization. The main mission of this museum is to be as a pedagogical, research and academic center at Al al-Bayt University and should satisfy the demands of the university’s prospective faculty, students and researchers, as well as concerned researchers from other national and international institutions and the public.

The museum was named Samarkand after the famous Islamic city of Samarkand, in order to giv it an Islamic identity.

The museum should serve as a dynamic facility in a growing institution (Al al-Bayt University), as an open Museum in the north-eastern region of Jordan, exhibiting not just part of the history of the Islamic civilization, but also part of the history of mankind since its beginnings. this region (the north-eastern of Jordan) witnessed the earliest of cultural contact with Muslim society, recently established in the Arabian Peninsula, as well as with the other existing cultures and civilizations. This region still contains a large amount of archaeological remains related to this period and representing this cultural process, such as Quser Amra, Hammam al-Sarah, Qasr al-Halabat, Qasr al-Asraq, Samma, Umm al-Surab, Umm al-Jimal, dayr al-Kahf, Umm al-Qutein and many other sites or castles spreeding all over this region.

In keeping also with the scope of the university, the Muslim world, as well as specific Muslim communities and anybody interested in the study of Islam and the Muslim people, the museum seeks to study, display and recount the entire history and cultural heritage of Islamic civilization and the previous and contemporary cultures that influenced it through its different periods in a proper manner, and contribute to the protection and preservation of this cultural heritage in cooperation with interested national and international organizations and institutions. The museum should also include exhibitions that reflect its research and field projects conducted inside or outside Jordan, whether independently or in cooperation with other local and foreign institutions.
