Description: On several occasions, members of UCL were concerned about the collections which were stocked in the basements of the Medicine Faculty. Some initiatives were taken, for example the Anatomy Museum, the Couvreur collection and the scanning of 650 photographic plates of Van Gehuchten collection. However, half of the museum waxes aren't yet visible, the pieces of the Couvreur collection are still in boxes and the inventory of van Gehuchten's books is still to be done. So nothing systematic all though the collections exist at the Hospital and Faculty and the undeniable's public interest in the collections.
In october 2003, a small group of persons met which led to the creation of the Commission of health science's history and patrimony of UCL.
Valorization of the patrimony and collections of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental art, Rehabilitation and Biomedical science is the main objective of the Commission. A subcommittee was created to help the Commission in its missions which are inventories, preservation and valorization. Marking the collections, doing the inventory, rescuing the collection when needed, assuring good conditions of preservation and accessibility, promoting them by improving their visibility in and outside the institution and valorizing them by several activities such as exhibitions, web sites, visits or publications. A serious work of sensitization must be done also inside the hospital and the Faculty so these witnesses of history and education don't vanish.
Medicine history research and some other studies related between medicine and culture constitute two other working axes of the commission.
