Description:
The Minzu University of China, one of the national key universities on the list of the “211 Project” and the “985 Project”, is a comprehensive research university with distinctive ethnic characteristics.

Founded in 1951, the Ethnic Museum of MUC is a museum of ethnology specializing in preservation, display and study of ethnic cultural relics of 56 ethnic groups in China. Preserved in it are 14 types, more than 20,000 pieces of cultural relics, including production tools, daily use articles, religious utensils, costumes, ancient relics, documents and musical instruments. Among them, the national traditional folk costumes, adornments are of the majority, reflecting the remarkable ability and virtuosity of the people of ethnic minorities in the textile, printing, dyeing, embroidery, leather tanning, and other aspects. And some of them are the presents dedicated to Chairman Mao and the Party of PRC, which has a very high political significance and historical value. Religious implements, artifacts, and literature collection of the Ming and Qing dynasties have the figures of Buddha, thangka, pattra-leaf scriptures, the Dongba, Ancester’s diagram, holy diagram. Treasures as clay pots, bronze drum in Qin and Han dynasties or before have historical and artistic value. Especially the relics collection of minorities of Taiwan culture is in the lead among similar domestic museums. They are of great historic, artistic and academic values.

The Exhibition of Traditional Culture of the Chinese Nation consists of four halls:1) Dress and Adornments Culture of the Northern Nationalities; 2) Dress and Adornments Culture of the Southern Nationalities; 3) Livelihood and Cultures; and 4) Religious Cultures. The special Exhibition halls includes the Exhibition of the History of the Minzu University of China, the Exhibition of Cultural Relics of Ethnic Minorities in Taiwan, and the Exhibition of the Ancient Scripts— symboles of the civilization.

Apart from preservation, display and study of cultural relics, the Ethnic Museum also offers “courses in ethnic costume design and fashion show”. We are trying to find a new way in running the museum by both making full use the dress and adornments kept in it and combining training talented personnel in costume design and fashion show with static exhibitions, dynamic display and publicity of ethnic costumes.
