Description:
The official opening of Ewha Womans University Museum was held in 1935 with an exhibition presenting a collection of Korean art and folk objects donated by professors and students. It was aimed to preserve Korean culture and boost the national spirit under the colonial rule of Japan. During the Korean War, the Museum lost much of its collection, but Dr. Helen Kim, the 7th President of Ewha, tried her very best to stop the loss and outflow of Korean cultural objects, and reorganized the museum at Pusan in 1952, so that the foreign visitors and members of the U.N. forces could learn about Korea.

In 1956, the collection was enriched by donation of hundreds of Dr. Helen Kim's personal collection and the accumulation and research continued afterwards. In 1960, a new museum building was constructed on the east side of gymnasium, exhibiting the collection until November 1989. In the needs of an effective management for the growing collection and an intensification of educational mission a new museum building of 1,300 square meters was opened in August 7, 1990 in memory of 100th anniversary of the university.
