Description:
UNESCO organized an international campaign during the 1960s to save the monuments of Nubia, including the temples of Abu Simbel and Philae. Within this framework Scandinavian archaeologists investigated a concession area in the Wadi Halfa reach in the northern Sudan (1961-64). The expedition was named the Scandinavian Joint Expedition to Sudanese Nubia (SJE). Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden financed the project which was directed by Professor Torgny Säve-Söderbergh of Uppsala University. The Sudan granted the Scandinavian countries many of the finds — a major part of the Nubian collections of the SJE as well as all documentation are now in the custody of Uppsala University. Highlights of the collection are on display alongside the Egyptian collections at the Uppsala University Museum.
