Description:
The Criminological Museum was established in 1929 with the purpose to collect and exhibit instruments used for the arrest, interrogation and punishment of criminals, in order to aid the practical teaching of students wanting to study criminal law. On the 70th anniversary of the founding of the University, the comprehensive collection of Japanese legal documents from the Edo Period and Japanese legislative documents from the Meiji Era was started. The materials in the collections number over 200,000. The Museum is known throughout Japan as an important historical museum. Newly collected materials are successively added to the Museum Catalog and made accessible to the public. The collections are utilized not only by the University's law, history and economics majors, but also by scholars throughout Japan. The Museum constantly places a portion of the collections on display in exhibits on specific themes, which are open to the public.
