Description: The Archaeological Museum was established in 1952 as a museum devoted to the science of archaeology. Although the greater part of the collection deals with Japanese archaeology, it contains a miscellaneous number of archaeological items from other countries as well. Most of the materials were collected through the excavation efforts of the Archaeological Institute of the School of Arts and Letters, which have been going on for over 40 years. Many other materials were donated to the Museum. The items in the collection, ranging materials from Paleolithic to Kofun period, at present number more than 100,000, making the role the Museum plays in archaeological research in Japan increasingly important. The Museum's exhibits are designed with the general public in mind, making them easy to understand and attractive to as many people as possible, scholars and laymen alike. The Museum's main activities include a yearly exhibit and two open lectures in the spring and autumn.
