Description: The Adam Art Gallery Te Pataka Toi is a world-class public gallery. The newest purpose-built university gallery in New Zealand, it offers a broad programme of exhibitions and events that foster the understanding and practice of national and international visual art and culture. Exhibitions present and critically interpret a range of disciplines, including the visual arts, craft, architecture, design and music and involve areas beyond the humanities.
The Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection is a university campus display collection managed by the Adam Art Gallery. The Collection comprises the Victoria University Collection, the Hall Collection (early 20th century New Zealand paintings gifted by Mr and Mrs T.D.H. Hall) and works on loan to the University. The University also has a collection of portraits of chancellors and significant councillors and academic staff. A substantial collection of artworks owned by the Staff Club, the earliest patrons of visual art at Victoria, are on permanent loan to the University. The University Collection comprises mainly two-dimensional work, primarily New Zealand painting since the 1960s, with a small number of important works from the 1930s and 40s, and a limited number of sculptures and works on paper.
The VUW Collection is on permanent display in public areas of the University buildings on campus and in the city of Wellington for the benefit of students, staff and visitors. The Collection is an excellent resource for research and study, and enriches the cultural and educational environment of the University and city.
