Description: The Center for Andean Ethnomusicology (formerly The Archive of Traditional Andean Music) was founded in 1985 at the Riva-Aguero Institute of the Catholic University of Peru with the support of the Ford Foundation. Its main purpose is to document, preserve, and disseminate Andean musical traditions. Its main tasks are:
To perform ethnographic research and audiovisual documentation of Andean music and its main cultural contexts: festival, ritual and dance.
To centralize and preserve audiovisual documents related to the main research topics.
To disseminate the investigations through diverse audiovisual means.
The Center's staff performs field research in specific regions of Peruvian Andes' documenting diverse musical traditions and their role in Andean culture. Fieldwork has been undertaken yearly in the following regions: Mantaro Valley (Junin), 1985; Cajamarca, 1987; Colca Valley (Arequipa), 1988; Cusco, 1989; Lambayeque, 1990; Puno, 1991; Callejon de Huaylas (Ancash), 1993; Canta and Huarochiri (Lima), 1993; Piura, 1994; Ayacucho, 1995-1996; and Apurimac and Huancavelica, 1997.
The Center's collection consists exclusively of field recordings and documentation which represent most regions of Peru. The Center accepts collections as donation, exchange or safekeeping. Actual holdings include more than 12,000 individual items; 12,000 color slides, and over 400 video recording hours.
